I am a journalist and author, a political tragic and rural resident. I live on a farm but float between The Paddock and The Parliament, specifically the Canberra press gallery.

I am excited to be on board The Hoopla as political correspondent. Most recently, I wrote The Sketch for The Australian newspaper, where I did my cadetship 28 years ago. I have also worked for the ABC, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and the good old arvo tub thumper, Daily Mirror, which has since closed down.

My books as author/editor include Australia Through Time, Flickers of History, War On Our Doorstep and FEAST.

You will find my political posts will appear under The Political.

Everything else regarding life in the country will appear under The Paddock.

I am fascinated by the life of fellow rural Australians and their interaction with politics, which makes this hung Parliament, with its balance of power held by Tony Windsor, Rob Oakeshott and Bob Katter, particularly interesting.

Like a good kelpie, I am hoping to push bush issues towards our political mob. I would love to hear your own stories and feedback so I can better reflect the diversity of rural Australia to the wider media and our politicians.

I welcome all comments, as long as they are polite, and to the point. Anything rude, lewd or foul will be unceremoniously dumped.

  1. Hi Gabrielle,
What’s a shadowy internet site? Is mine one? http://www.michaelsmithnews.com

I’m referring to your piece about Ms Gillard, “Gillard seized the moment on the last sitting day, after a year of finger-pointing on shadowy internet sites ”
